The first common mistake involves the word ‘ever’. We often use this word in questions when we want to know about the things people have done.

For example, ‘Have you ever traveled in a bajaj in Jakarta?’

I asked a number of people the same question. Look carefully at their answers.

Cheryl: ‘Have you ever travelled in a bajaj in Jakarta, Sue?’
Sue: ‘Yes, I have.’
Cheryl: ‘Kevin, have you ever travelled in a bajaj in Jakarta?’
Kevin: ‘Yes, many times.’
Cheryl: ‘Have you ever travelled in a bajaj in Jakarta, Ogi?’
Ogi: ‘No I haven't, but I have travelled by bajaj in Bengkalis.’

Now, did you notice that nobody used the word ‘ever’? Many English language learners make the mistake of translating the word ‘pernah’ into English and including it in their answer. You do use the word ‘pernah’ in Indonesian but we don't use the word ‘ever’ in English when we're talking about the things we've done.
